About Coffee Shack Backpackers

Coffee Shack is idyllically nestled on the beach where the Bomvu River meets the warm blue Indian Ocean. Coffee Shack has a reputation of being a fun, good-value hostel with excellent facilities and the most amazing, friendly local staff. The local Tshezi Community Trust has 30% share in Coffee Shack, and we are proudly accredited by Fair Trade Tourism (www.fairtrade.travel )

We offers clean, safe, budget accommodation, and our bathroom facilities are excellent. If you're looking for peace and quiet, there are traditional thatched huts (dorms, doubles and en-suite rooms) across the river, at backpacker rates.

Our kitchen serves up scrumptious breakfasts (& of course great coffees) and 2-course dinners at very reasonable prices (There's always a vegetarian option). If you prefer to self-cater, we have two well-equipped guest kitchens. The Babalaza Bar can be very festive and a lot of fun in the evenings. We offer a variety of day trips every day, exploring the area and its cultures.

Out speciality is surfing, and you cannot beat our R50/2 hour surf lessons, or the 5 Day Learn to Surf Packagefor only R3000, which includes accommodation, breakfast & dinners, 7 surf lessons, equipment hire included.

DRIVING FROM DURBAN DIRECTION:

The first and most important instruction is to TURN OFF your GPS/google maps/navigation system and just follow these easy directions.

1.Take the N2 to Mthatha (Umtata) and continue on towards East London

2.After 20km take the Coffee Bay/Mqanduli exit

3.Continue on this road for 80km and you will arrive in Coffee Bay.

The road is tarred the whole way, however it has quite a few potholes after about half-way, so drive carefully and plan to arrive in daylight. Keep an eye out for stray animals and pedestrians.
